About Chugach Powder Guides
OUR TERRAIN
Chugach Powder Guides holds the only special use permit to conduct helicopter skiing operations in a large expanse of the Western Chugach Mountains. This area extends from Girdwood east toward Prince William Sound and south onto the Kenai Peninsula. With no pressure from other operators, it is nearly impossible to exhaust all the powder between snowfalls.
We ski from sea level to approximately 6,500 feet (1,981 m) of elevation. Timberline is at approximately 2,200 feet (670 m), offering up to 2,000 feet (609 m) of tree skiing when conditions permit.
CONDITIONS
The Western Chugach Mountain Range benefits from the combined influences of warm Pacific Ocean air mixing with cold Arctic air from the Alaskan Interior. This produces the high-quality dry powder skiing this coastal mountain range has become famous for. Chugach Powder Guides' helicopter and snowcat skiing areas average approximately 800+ inches of snowfall each winter. Chugach Powder Guides was founded in 1997 by Mike Overcast, Dave Hamre, Dave Marshall and former Olympian, Tommy Moe. Alaska was just starting to come on the world scene as a recognized leader in backcountry ski terrain. The founding partners of CPG realized that the immense Chugach Range isn't just for adrenaline junkies alone. They knew that the oceans of mountains right in back of Girdwood could be experienced by many levels of competent skiers and boarders. Since then, we have made over 9,000 landings while maintaining one of the best safety records in the industry. Our terrain and reputation have bought the finest backcountry guides in North America to our door. CPG understands that if our clients come all the way to Alaska, it is imperative that they ski or ride if at all possible. With this in mind, we developed our snowcat skiing terrain for no-fly days and have fostered a cooperative relationship with Alyeska Resort to assure that you ski or board no matter what.
