About Wildhorse Catskiing

Starting in the old mining town of Ymir we travel from 3500 ft. to 5000 ft by snowmobile. This is the start of the powder snow zone. Frequently skiers will jump off the trail into waist deep powder. We travel through thick spruce and hemlock trees into huge cedars and past 2000' high ridgelines with cliffs and avalanches. Our runs start in light alpine trees with perfect spaces for your line. British Columbia is famous for its tree skiing and this is some of the finest. Tree skiing holds the snow better, preserves the powder longer and eliminates the effects of the wind. The powder is simply better, ask any experienced powder skier. The mountains are just above us and sometimes we climb to the summit to see the roof of the world. An endless chain of mountains as far as the eyes can see. Unless its snowing and then, well we are pretty busy then too.

Wildhorse Catskiing & Powder Mining Co. is a unique backcountry and mechanized powder skiing experience. Utilizing over 100 sq km of skiable terrain with snowcat trails to alpine peaks at 7,000 ft to backcountry yurts for wilderness accommodation and touring for turns.

Wildhorse is built around old mining roads in the Southern Selkirk mountains of British Columbia. Snowmobiles are used for tours and access up the scenic valley's. Snowcat roads access a gold mine of powder runs each better than the last. When will you strike it rich! Head for the Hills. At the very edge of the snowcat skiing terrain near great alpine peaks and bowls are yurts for backcountry accommodation and a destination in their own right for backcountry skiers.

For discerning powder skiers who know that the best turns are where few have ventured before - turning left instead of right - dropping in instead of dropping out - we have something for every budget and every level of skier and adventurer.

Equipment Used

We start the day with a cup of coffee and a 30 minute ride on a snowmobile sleigh traveling through a snowfilled country valley road. The snowmobiles are quiet 4 stroke arctic cat traveling at a sedate 30 km/h. It is a beautiful start to the morning and gets us to the snowcat and skiing fast. The snowcat is a Bombardier 400 MP outfitted with a 12 person passenger cab. Comfortable padded seats and heating. There is lots of facilities for drying out snow choked goggles.

Packages & Pricing

Wildhorse Catskiing & Powder Mining Co. offers everything from the simplest backcountry skiing package to the most pampered massage after dinner and fine wines experience. If you love skiing then you will love Wildhorse.

Many of our snowcat skiers stay in the historic town of Ymir. There is a cafe and a bar in town. We start our morning in the Cafe and end the day in the bar. It's a pretty simple life out here and during the day we turn left, and then right and repeat. I call it perfect private powder. Our basic catskiing day cranks out around 12,000 ft of powder smiles followed by a beer and a mellow snowmobile ride back to town. Starting from $225 for a standby pass, $295 and $350 for regular catskiing rates. Packages including accommodation and all meals involve significant discounts.

Ymir Yurts offers accommodation for backcountry skiers in a choice of cabins with occupancy from 6 or 8 people with sauna in a self catered or catered experience. Backcountry skiers can choose self guided to benefit from our years of route finding and avalanche risk assessment. Prices start at under $30 per person per night.
